The late Mr. Tan Soon Heng, a native of Teochew from the southern province of Guangdong, China came to the then Malaya at the turn of the 20th Century armed with the craftsmanship of a 3000-year old tradition.
In 1920, he started a small cottage workshop with a few friends in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur to produce large earthen jars. Few years later, Mr. Tan decided to set up a separate business by himself in Bachang, Malacca. In 1925, Ban Hoe Huat Pottery, was established and major production of rubber cup for the rubber estate of multi-national company. When clay deposits were discovered in Johor in 1935, Mr. Tan Sr. moved further south to Ayer Hitam to produce subsoil pipes and latex cups for the market in the southern region. Thus, with a small workforce of 15 persons, Johore Pipe Company (JPC) was born.
In 1958, Mr. Tan Soon Heng passed away and his son Mr. Tan Chong Cheng took over the helm of JPC. From there on for the next for decades the CLAYTAN Group has grown many times over under the stewardship of Mr. Tan Jr. to realize the dream and vision of his late father, to be the mist diversified ceramic manufacture in Malaysia, producing a wide array of ceramic ware ranging from vitrified clay pipes, sanitaryware, artware to hotelware and household tableware.

Since its inception, Johor Pipe Company (JPC) 1935 has expanded its operations to encompass a varied product range of vitrified clay pipes. The company is also proud to have undertaken Malaysia’s first sewerage project. Subsequently, JPC-Intan Sdn. Bhd. (JPC-Intan) 1983 was established to undertake major sewerage projects, as the nation developed under the Fifth Malaysia Plan. In addition, JPC has also gained the distinction of produce the largest pipes (with a diameter of 600mm) in South East Asia.
The production of ceramic sanitaryware began in 1952 at the JPC Factory. Thereafter, Clay Industries Sdn. Bhd. (CISB) was set up in 1965 to focus on manufacturing only sanitaryware products.
CISB sanitaryware have gained a definite market niche, being marketed under its own brands of ‘GLOBE’, ‘CLAYTAN’ and ‘LEGEND’ not only in the ASEAN region, but also in other parts of the world. In Malaysia, the CLAYTAN brand has long been recognized as a symbol of exceptional quality and exquisite craftsmanship, being the preferred choice among industry suppliers and the like. Despite this strong footing, the company continues to be resolute in expanding to wider markets to further enhance its favorable positioning.
This is evident in the jobs awarded to CISB to contract manufacture for the renowned international sanitaryware manufacturer from Australia, Japan, United Kingdom and USA under difference brands including Caroma, Janis, and Thetford.
Established in 1975, Oriental Ceramics Sdn. Bhd.(OCSB) is Malaysia’s only major ceramic dinnerware manufacturer producing a full range of high quality fine English Earthenware. Besides its own CLAYTAN brand, the company also contract manufactures for export. In 1995, CLAYTAN FINE CHINA (CFC) was established specializing in stoneware, vitreous china tableware and artware.
CLAYTAN has been manufacturing high quality ceramic tableware that complies with USA FDA and California Proposition 65 standards. Our products are guaranteed to be lead and cadmium safe, as well as safe for use in ovens, microwave ovens & dishwasher.
